On July 29th Ivanhoe Mines 2019, a mining company, announced that the mineralisation of massive copper sulphide in the kamoa-kakula mining licence in the democratic republic of Congo was set to increase further.
It is found in the drilling that the shallow thick copper-rich Kamoa North ore body expands 200 meters along the strike. At present, the ore body is at least 550 meters long, estimated to be at least 2700 meters long and 60 meters wide along the strike. At the heart of the discovery, samples were taken and analysed to reveal super-rich copper deposits with a thickness of more than 15.5m and a copper grade of 13.8%. Currently, ivanhoe has six drilling RIGS in kamoa north, with the goal of further expanding the range of mineralization along the strike to delineate the resource as soon as possible. At the same time, drilling at the Western Foreland mine, North of the Kamoa – kakura rights, found that the shallow, high-grade Kamoa Far North copper belt stretched for at least 400 metres
This is absolutely heartening news, since kamoa is now the largest copper mine in Africa and the fourth largest in the world, and ivanhoe’s founder and chief executive, Robert Friedland, said production capacity could easily triple in the first phase of the project. Kamua-kakura has the potential to become the world’s second-largest copper mine.
When fully developed, the kamua-kakula copper mine will produce 382,000 tons of copper per year in the first 10 years after it is put into production, and the capacity will increase rapidly to 700,000 tons 12 years after it is put into production.
